Math Overview
AlphaStar Winter Online Math Camp is a unique opportunity for interested and talented students to improve their math subject skills quickly and boost their exam performance during winter break before the upcoming competition season. As the MathCounts and American Mathematics Competitions sequence are fast approaching, the camp gives students a boosting opportunity to review the materials, practice and master their problem solving skills and learn exam strategies.
Students are guided and trained by an expert faculty via utilizing national and international competitions in a fun and challenging environment.
Two types of courses will be offered during the camp.
Booster Courses: A boosting opportunity for students to improve their exam performance in AMC 10 and AIME before the upcoming official contests.
Features:
- Focus on exam practice and strategies
- Selected topics and skills that are essential for math competition mastery
- In-class Mock Exams created by AlphaStar Faculty (3 in AMC10 levels and 2 in AIME levels) and solution sessions
- Special sessions with exam strategy tips to increase exam score and performance
Subject Courses: An opportunity for students to improve their math levels and problem solving skills in one or two subjects of their choice in only 6 days. Algebra, Counting, Geometry, and Number Theory subjects are offered in all levels as self-study courses and, as live courses in MC20 AMC 8/MathCounts Basic and MC25 AMC 8/MathCounts Advanced levels via half-day sessions. These are the same courses as the ones offered in Summer/Fall/Spring courses.

- Covers all the curriculum in the subject area (via 12 chapters)
- Homework/Quiz for each chapter (and in-class Homework review)
- Final Exam (not in class)

Levels
Below is a short description for each level. For more details and diagnostic exams, please click on the course name below.
- MC15 (Pre-MathCounts): For students in grades 4-6 who are good at school math
- MC20 (AMC 8/MathCounts Basic): For middle school students who are familiar with Pre-Algebra topics and want to start training for middle school math competitions
- MC25 (AMC 8/MathCounts Advanced): For middle school students who are familiar with Algebra-1 topics and want to master middle school math competitions
- MC30 (AMC 10 Basic): For middle and high school students who are familiar with Algebra-1 topics and want to start training for high school math competitions AMC 10
- MC35 (AMC 10 Advanced): For middle and high school students who are very comfortable with Algebra-1 topics and want to master high school math competitions AMC 10
- MC40 (AIME Basic): For students who are comfortable with AIME qualification and want to start training for AIME, ARML, and high school competitions organized by prestigious universities
- MC45 (AIME Advanced): For students who want to master AIME, ARML, and high school competitions organized by prestigious universities
- MC50 (USA(J)MO): An introductory proof writing course. For students who are confident about USAJMO/USAMO qualification and are willing to work one hour on a single math Olympiad problem.

Faculty
AlphaStar Academy mainly considers teaching, competition, and education background as well as passion and dedication for the subject when hiring full-time and part-time teachers.
We hire our instructors and TAs from a pool of High School, College, Ph.D. students, school teachers, and University Professors. Our faculty have teaching/coaching/tutoring experience and have expertise in the subject area, regardless of their age.
They have participation and/or training experience in national/international math competitions and Olympiads in Math, CS, and Physics such as USAMO, USACO, USAPhO, IMO, IOI, and IPhO.
They are role models and inspiration for students with their backgrounds and achievements.

![]() Paul Dreyer (ARML President)Paul Dreyer is a mathematician at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA. At RAND, Paul uses mathematical modeling and simulation on a wide variety of military, energy, and security issues. Recently, his work has concentrated on aircraft survivability and how airbases operate while under attack. He also teaches courses on quantitative problem solving in the Financial Engineering Department at the UCLA Andersen School of Management and has consulted on multiple game shows including Million Second Quiz and Let's Ask America. He is also the president of the American Regions Mathematics League as well as one of its authors. He received his PhD in mathematics from Rutgers University in 2000, writing his dissertation on the applications of graph theory to problems in facilities placement, modeling opinion formulation in groups, and methods to speed up searches through protein sequence databases. Prior to joining RAND, Paul spent summers working at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD and one of its subcontractors, the IDA Center for Computing Science in Bowie, MD researching topics in cryptography and computer security. In 2011 to 2013, Paul also worked as a trader at Jane Street Capital. |
